Marc Hanson-5 Day Northern California Plein Air Workshop
Monday, May 19, 2008 at 9:00 AM
A five day intensive plein air landscape workshop for artists of any level working in oil or pastels
Dates: May 19 -May 23, 2008 Cost: $550.00 (See details below) Contact: Marc R. Hanson paintbox1@frontiernet.net The purpose of this workshop is to reinforce the 'basics' in your approach to painting. How to effectively structure a painting from 'concept' to the last brush stroke, re-examining your understanding of 'value' relationships, how they relate to color relationships, and how that understanding makes for a stronger painting. I will emphasize simplifying masses, value, color, and details in your studies in order to more effectively communicate your idea to the viewer. It is not a class where you will leave with a collection of finished paintings ready for framing, but you will leave with a better understanding of how to structure a painting from the ground up. Demonstrations, exercises, plenty of painting time, critiques at the easel and as a group, will fill the 5 days of this workshop. There will be some group lecture and discussion, but I'm a firm believer that it's the work "on the ground" that does a student the most good and I like to devote as much time as possible during a workshop to more painting, less talking. The class is open to painters of any level working in oil paints or pastels. We will be painting outside no matter the weather. If you are a pastelist and paint in another more 'weather worthy' medium, I'd suggest bringing it along in addition to the pastels just in case. Times: 9AM- 5PM , A one hour break for lunch 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Cost: The cost is $550.00 with a non-refundable Deposit of $100.00 dollars due at sign up to reserve a place in the class. The Balance of $450.00 is due by MAY 1, 2008. This is the cut-off date for enrollment and the receipt of the deposit. After this date I will turn to the waiting list to fill any spaces in the class that are available. *We'll meet at least one night ( weather dependent ) for painting 'Nocturnes' as a group. This will require the purchase of a Mighty Bright 'Full Spectrum' book light. They're available at Borders Books for about $20.00, or online. I'll send a link to that address when you register for class. *Cancellation Policy- No deposits refunded, unless I have to cancel the class for unavoidable reasons. If you have to cancel, I need to be notified before May 19, 2008. Only then will the Balance, if paid, be refunded. To sign up, email this announcement back to me with your mailing address, phone number and send a 'Deposit' check for $100.00 made out to: Marc Hanson. I will send a confirmation back when the check has been received. The class is limited to 20 students, minimum number to hold the workshop is 8 students. Sign ups are first come - first served and will be registered as deposits are received. Supply lists, location directions, lodging information (lodging is up to each participant to secure on his/her own at the participants expense), and maps will be provided as we approach the dates and as the class registrations fill. Thank you.

Marc Hanson "Outside from the Outside", 5 Day Plein Air Workshop, Traverse City, MI
Monday, June 23, 2008 at 9:00 AM
'artcenter' Traverse City, MI hosts this five day workshop for Oil and Pastel Painters of any level.
This is an on location landscape painting workshop for painters working in either oils or pastels. All skill levels are welcome. We'll be painting at one of the countries most beautiful locations, the northwest coast of Michigan along the shores of Lake Michigan. Traverse City and the surrounding area abounds with some of the most attractive painting locations in the region. From the white sand beaches and aqua marine green waters, the plentiful cherry orchards and spectacular vineyards, there is more than enough to keep you occupied for your five day stay. My goal is to send you home with a pile of information, exercises and a new outlook on what is possible for you to do with your medium of choice, and the landscape. It is not my goal to be sure that you go home with a pile of framable paintings. I strongly believe that it's the perfect time to either review or learn more about the basics that make a good solid painting. We'll work through the five days with a series of exercises that are designed to reinforce your knowledge about drawing, value, composition, color and the other factors that make a painting successful. Hope to see you there.
